Pretérito indefinido or pretérito perfecto simple tense in Spanish (Preterite past tense in Spanish). Main irregular verbs: verbs which change their stem.

For a grammar explanation of regular verbs in this tense, please see http://spanish-courses.com.ar/preterito-indefinido-o-preterito-perfecto-simple-regular-past-tense-spanish/ where the regular verb group endings are listed and there is also an exercise to fill and practice.

Main and most usual irregular verbs in Pretérito indefinido or pretérito perfecto simple  tense in Spanish change the verb stem. So first we need to split the infinitive verb into the stem and the ending. It’s very easy to do. You just have to remove the two last letters from the end of the infinitive (-ar, -er or -ir ) and you have the stem. For example in case of verb “tener”:

  • the stem is: ten-
  • and the ending is: -er
  • the verb “tener” changes its stem to “tuv-“ (below a list of the changed stems of main verbs)
  • Here a list of the changed stem of main verbs:
  • You have to use the changed stem (tuv- in this case) in each person as the basis for the conjugations, the common prefix that each of the forms begins with.

Next, add to this stem the endings specific to each person. For irregular verbs which change the stem, these are the endings for this group of verbs (no matter if the infinitive ends –ar, -er and –ir):

YoTú / Vos

Usted/ él / ella

Nosotros / nosotras

Vosotros / vosotras

Ustedes / ellos / ellas

-e-iste

-o

-imos

-isteis

-ieron (-eron)

All the verbs ending in -ducir change the last c of the stem to the letter j in Pretérito Perfecto Simple. Irregular endings are used. So in the case of “producir”, for example, the stem produc change c to j to get produj. Additionally in all the stems ending with “j”,  in the third person plural (ustedes, ellos, ellas), the ending used  is “-eron” instead of “-ieron”, so “ustedes / ellos / ellas produjeron”, “ustedes / ellos / ellas dijeron”, etc.

Pretérito Indefinido o Pretérito Perfecto Simple Regular. Past tense in Spanish

Pretérito indefinido o pretérito perfecto simple (both names can be used for this tense) of the indicative mood is one of the past tenses in Spanish.

These are the forms for the regular verbs:

CANT – AR COM – ER VIV – IR
(yo) cant com viv
(tú / vos) cant -ASTE com -ISTE viv -ISTE
(él, ella, usted) cant com -IÓ viv -IÓ
(nosotros, nosotras) cant -AMOS com -IMOS viv -IMOS
(vosotros, vosotras) cant -ASTEIS com -ISTEIS viv – ÍSTEIS
(ellos, ellas, ustedes) cant -ARON com -IERON viv -IERON

Note: the 1st person plural of the verbs ending in -ar and -ir are the same in pretérito indefinido and present tense, but thanks to the context we can know what they refer to.

When do we use pretérito indefinido?

Generally speaking, pretérito indefinido is used for actions in the past that are seen as completed. Use of the preterite tense implies that the past action had a definite beginning and definite end, althought the beginning and the end may not always be clearly stated.

Examples:

Indefinido

Juan caminó de la una hasta las dos.
Juan walked from one until two o’clock.
(here it is clearly stated beginning and end)

Juan caminó dos horas.
Juan walked for two hours.
(here beginning and end are implied)

Juan caminó con un amigo.
Juan walked with a friend.
(here beginning and end are implied)

Now you can complete the following exercise to practice. Tip: mind the accents (the vowels which have to be stressed) because in other case, the answer is not considered right.
